The England winger fed Kevin De Bruyne before making a lung-bursting run in behind.
As he always does, the Belgian spotted the movement and played an inch-perfect pass, allowing Sterling to prod past Elliot at the near post for his 17th goal of the season.
It was just what City needed, with Newcastle proving a tough nut to crack following Rafa Benitez's decision to go with five at the back.
