A statement released by Manchester United acknowledged that the operation ''had gone very well'' but there have been no further updates on the legendary manager's condition.
Meanwhile, the Ferguson family has called for privacy as they monitor his recovery in the Salford Royal Hospital.
United tweeted: ''We will keep Sir Alex and his loved ones in our thoughts during this time, and we are united in our wish to see him make a comfortable, speedy recovery. He needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.''
Since the news broke regarding Ferguson's condition, well-wishing messages and support have flooded in from all corners of the football community.
Former United midfielder David Beckahm said: ''Keep fighting boss. Sending prayers to Cathy [Ferguson's wife] and the whole family.''
Everton manager Sam Allardyce added: ''I hope he's in good hands and I hope the operation is a major success. As a personal friend, I hope he has a full recovery.''
Several of his former clubs also offered their support in wishing Ferguson a speedy recovery in addition to numerous players, both past and present.
