In fact, his first team in Spain was the Andalusians. He moved to Seville after playing for Pisa Calcio in Italy.
It was Bilardo who was in charge at the time in Seville and he made it clear that he wanted the Argentine, eventually getting his wish. It cost Sevilla 160million Spanish pesetas.
He spent two seasons in Seville, winning nothing, but not for a lack of trying.
Following on from this, in 1994, 'El Cholo' became an Atletico Madrid player. It was here that he finally did win a trophy in Spain; a cup and league double in 1995/96.
The rest is a well known story. He returned to Italy with Inter and then Lazio.
However, Atleti is Atleti and he couldn't resist coming back. He returned for two seasons in 2003, before going back to his native Argentina and seeing out his remaining playing years at Racing.
Immediately after his retirement, he picked up the coaching manuals and took a job in Argentina. He had a brief spell in Italy before taking the reins at Racing.
Then, once again, Atletico came calling. He got the call from Madrid asking him to join their team and he couldn't say no.
He has now been the manager at Atletico for six years, but today he will be looking even further back in his career. Any feelings of nostalgia will be supressed however, as Sevilla are today's rivals.
Simeone has always made it clear that Sevilla are a special opponent for him, but he'll be hoping the past doesn't get in the way of the present.
