With City looking to overturn their 3-0 defeat in the first leg every decision was always likely to be place under close scrutiny.
Gabriel Jesus got City's rescue mission off to the perfect start early on and things looked good for Pep Guardiola's side.
With just two minutes to go before the break City had the ball in the net again as Leroy Sane got the deftest of touches on the ball after Loris Karius failed to adequately clear a long ball.
The goal was quickly disallowed for offside, with only one Liverpool player goalside of Sane, who was beyond Karius, when the ball was played.
However, the replays showed that the ball had rebounded towards his own goal off James Milner and that the goal should therefore have stood.
