Gareth Bale is eager to prove his worth to Zidane. A string of injuries has kept him out of the majority of the campaign thus far, but a timely return just before Real host Barcelona could serve for the Welshman to hit back at his critics.
He is by no means guaranteed the chance to show Zidane he deserves a place in the starting lineup, but he will be determined if an opening arises. It has been a frustrating year for Bale, who has enjoyed a peripheral role as Real Madrid clinched five major trophies for the first time.
Thigh and calf injuries allowed his replacement Isco to shine in the closing stages of last season and, with Madrid chief Florentino Perez reportedly running out of patience, his detractors have surfaced amid his absence.
But now he may have the chance to show his commitment, to fight back for his team in the midst of arguably the toughest time during Zidane's tenure. Odds are stacked up against him, as they are against last year's champions emerging victorious over Valverde's unbeaten Barcelona side.
Bale has made just five La Liga appearances this term, but we have seen flashes of brilliance from the forward in the Champions League and the Club World Cup. On Saturday, it seems unlikely Bale will be included in Zidane's starting strategy.
Previously an unquestioned starter, the Welshman will have to settle for being the backup plan. After eight weeks on the sidelines, he could not have timed his return any better. If he does eventually get the call, it may be one final chance to shine.
