Newcastle have been on the lookout for a forward player for some time now, having seen two bids for Feyenoord's Nicolai Jorgensen turned down by the Dutch side.
According to English publication 'The Sun', Benitez have been offered Luan, who has been on the radar of several Premier League sides in recent years.
The 24-year-old is currently plying his trade for Brazilian side Gremio in his homeland but is thought to be keen on a move to Europe to further his international chances.
According to the aformentioned source, Newcastle have been given a first option on the player, with the fee set at £17.5m.
Luan has scored 36 goals in 130 games for Gremio, with his performances leading to him claiming two international caps for the 'Seleçao'.
The move for Luan could be offset by the departure of Aleksandar Mitrovic, with Brighton seeing a bid for the Serb turned down last week.
