Tomas Mejias concluded his first training session with Spanish second-division side Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday and is set to join the Madrid club on a loan deal from Middlesbrough, 'Sky Sports' has reported.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, a former player of Real Madrid's B side, had last winter extended his contract with the Premier League club until 2018. He will now return to Spain until the end of the current season, when the loan expires.
Fellow Spaniard Victor Valdes has claimed the starting goalkeeper's spot at Middlesbrough spot since his arrival from Manchester United and with manager Aitor Karanka favouring Brad Guzan and Dimitris Konstantopoulos, Mejias had effectively been relegated to fourth choice.
Mejias had come close to leaving Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window but that move did not materialise and the goalkeeper did not make even a single appearance with Boro since the start of the season.
