After his inexperienced side beat Chile in the Confederations Cup final yesterday, Low was justifiably delighted, though that delight may turn to frustration when he comes to pick his World Cup squad next year.
Low left the likes of Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira, Marco Reus and Thomas Muller out of his Confederations Cup squad whilst Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, Julian Weigl and Jonathan Tah were also all missing through injury. Nevertheless, Germany still romped to victory.
That coupled with their U21 European Championship victory has made it a successful summer for Germany, though Low was under no impressions that the work was already done, he told the press "we certainly have a lot of players who in those two tournaments have filled up on confidence, but for those players the work is just starting, the big tournaments are still to come. To get to world class level is an even bigger challenge."
The big challenge for Low will come when he has to name his World Cup squad, will he be able to justify leaving out the likes of Confederations Cup Golden Boot winner Timo Werner, Julian Draxler, who was named the tournament's best player, or Lars Stindl or Leon Goretzka who both impressed, registering 3 goals apiece in the competition. That is without mentioning the likes of Max Arnold, Serge Gnabry and Jeremy Toljan who all impressed for the U21s.
Germany are certainly in a strong position and there will be some envious eye cast in their direction given the depth of their squad.
