Third-tier Real Murcia visited the Camp Nou in search of something special to achieve a feat only within reach of the best teams in the world on a very good night. And even then, this is Barcelona we are talking about.
Ernesto Valverde fielded an admittedly inexperienced side which was largely composed by youngsters, but also featured the likes of Paco Alcacer or Gerard Pique, who captained his side while the former was in charge of opening the scoring.
The Camp Nou is quite possibly the toughest stage to attempt to overturn a three-goal deficit and Real Murcia's slim hopes took a huge blow after 15 minutes of sustained pressure when an unfortunate clearance allowed Alcacer to head the ball past goalkeeper Santome.
The visitors had managed to maintain a certain shape with Barcelona hogging the ball but it was only a matter of time before La Liga leaders capitalised on their dominance and Murcia's organised layout unravelled.
Deulofeu or Aleña could have extended the hosts' lead in a first half that slowly petered out with Barcelona looking increasingly lethargic. Murcia, however, could not find the way to take advantage of their complacency.
It all changed after the break, with Barcelona turning on the style and it proved too much for Murcia to handle. Deulofeu warned when his shot across goal smacked the base of the post, but it was not to be the former Everton man's night, as he tried desperately to find the back of the net but failed.
Gerard Pique did manage to get his name on the scoresheet, tapping in a pass from Aleix Vidal, who himself headed home three minutes later from Nelson Semedo's cross.
Denis Suarez played a lovely one-two with Sergi Roberto, before the former buried the return pass into the bottom corner. Suarez was again involved in the fifth and final goal, setting up Jose Arnaiz with a superb back-heel pass for the youngster to fire into the corner.
Deulofeu came close to a goal but was denied by Santome, who will seek solace in his save as Barcelona cruised to a 8-0 aggregate win to clinch their place in the Copa del Rey last 16.
