The Spain international has been a long-term target for the Spanish giants and famously came close to returning to his homeland with the Bernabeu-based side back on deadline day 2015.
That deal collapsed at the last minute though and Real were forced to persevere with Keylor Navas as their No 1, but despite his solid performances, the 'Los Blancos' hierarchy is continuing to assess other options, with De Gea top of their list of options.
Spanish publication 'Diario Gol' reports that the 27-year-old is keen on a return to the Spanish capital, having started his career at Real's City rivals Atletico.
However, they also report that the Manchester United man has demanded a salary of £10.6m per year (£204,000 per week), which would put him on a par with the likes of Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale and not too far South of Cristiano Ronaldo's pay packet, in order to make the move.
Despite this, United are unlikely to be willing to let their star go anytime soon, especially after he made 14 saves in the 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the weekend to equal a Premier League record.
The Spaniard will be rested for United's Champions League game against CSKA Mosocow on Tuesday, giving Sergio Romero a rare chance to impress.
Is De Gea worth that sort of money? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
