"Jose Mourinho seems to have problems with Paul Pogba on and off the pitch and with Mourinho there always feels like there is that negativity, whatever job he's been in," Carragher explained. "It normally comes in year three, at this time it looks like it's coming in year two."
Former Liverpool player Carragher may have a point, with Mourinho's last two jobs ending with him leaving amid a cloud of player resentment. During his second spell at Chelsea he was sacked in the middle of his third season after many of his key players seemed to down tools after being unhappy at his management. At Real Madrid before then, Mourinho reportedly fell out with many key players, in particular Iker Casillas, as well as Sergio Ramos and even Cristiano Ronaldo.
Carragher also believes that another finish outside the top four would see Mourinho's stock fall as a manager.
"Now they missed out last season in terms of League position, got in there, won two trophies and qualified for the Champions League in the best way by winning a trophy, but this season is about really challenging and going for the title," he said. "They'll still go second today (Sunday v Chelsea) but it'd be a massive stain on Mourinho's record if he missed the top four two years running."
