Barcelona will try to sign a defender in the January transfer window after being dealt a huge blow in the form of Umtiti's injury. Mascherano revealed he will leave the club, which has also influenced the club's decision.
Valverde is keen on a quality signing up to the level expected at the Camp Nou, but also with a promising future ahead. Three names are being considered: De Ligt, Upamecano and Skriniar.
De Ligt is still just 18 years old and is the latest talent to emerge from Ajax's academy. Despite his youth, he has already made 42 appearances for the Dutch club, including last season's Europa League final against Manchester United.
According to Spanish radio program 'El Transistor', Ajax want at least €50 million for the youngster. Valverde prefers him to Yerry Mina, who would cost between nine and 11 million.
Upamecano is almost out of the question due to his €100 million release clause at RB Leipzig. The Frenchman, who is only 19 years of age, is reportedly against a move to the Camp Nou.
Skriniar is another of Barcelona's options, but the Slovakian also stated he was not interested in joining the Catalans. The 22-year-old's contract at Inter runs until 2022 and the Serie A outfit would also demand at least €50 million.
