In what is a far cry from Barca's glory days, Ernesto Valverde has built the current Barca side around their defence. The former Athletic Bilbao boss saw Barca's defensive frailties laid bare for all to see during the Spanish Super Cup defeat to arch-rivals Real Madrid and has since gone about ensuring that the club do not leak cheap goals in the future.
The Barca that we see today is a new Barca, one that cannot be compared to swashbuckling sides like Manchester City or PSG who are among the top scorers in Europe.
The solidity of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti at centre-half has shone through under Valverde's leadership, with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's ability finally starting to shine through and silence his doubters.
The German stopper has only been made to pick the ball out of his net on four occasions in the league so far this campaign (against Getafe, Eibar, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla) and just the once in four Champions League games (against Olympiakos).
With these stats in mind it is fair to say that Barca have developed, with their defence arguable their most impressive element these days.
