Since making his England debut in 2003, Wayne Rooney has had an extraordinary international career.
He has showed, in some moments, why he is regarded as one of the best England players of all time. In other moments, he has caused controversy and failed to live up to huge expectations.
Here are Rooney's top 10 defining moments from his England career...
International debut
Rooney made his England debut on Febuary 13, 2003 making him the youngest England debutant at the time, a record since surpassed by Theo Walcott. The historic moment at Upton Park was unfortunately overshadowed by Australia earning a shock 3-1 win.
Youngest ever scorer
Rooney's goal against Macedonia during a qualifier for Euro 2004 made him England's youngest scorer of all time, at the tender young age of 17 years and 317 days.
Euro 2004 vs Croatia
Rooney scored twice in a thrilling 4-2 victory when England needed a victory to progress out of the group stage. He had previously set the record for the youngest scorer at the Euro finals with a brace against Switzerland.
Euro 2004 vs Portugal
Just as Rooney was set to dominate in Portugal and steer England to glory, a broken foot suffered early in quarter-final ended his tournament. England went on to lose on penalties.
2006 World Cup red card
Rooney was injured going into the tournament in Germany, and the half-fit striker struggled to make an impact before being sent off in the quarter-final clash with Portugal for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho. England lost on penalties - again.
Algeria rant
After failing to qualify for Euro 2008, England went into the 2010 World Cup with high hopes. However an awful tournament was summed up by a shocking 0-0 draw with Algeria, which was compounded by Rooney complaining about the fans on camera after the final whistle. He later apologised.
Winner vs Ukraine
After missing the first two games of Euro 2012 through suspension, Rooney rescued England against hosts Ukraine, scoring the only goal as England topped their group.
Only World Cup goal
One thing which may be held against Rooney following his retirement is the fact that he only managed one goal at a World Cup tournament, which came in a game against Uruguay in 2014. England lost 2-1, as they did in the previous game against Italy, and finished bottom of the group.
50th record-breaking England goal
A superb penalty against Switzerland at Wembley meant that Rooney suceeded where Gary Lineker and Jimmy Greaves failed, in breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's international goal record on his 107th cap.
Final goal vs Iceland
Rooney's 53rd and final international goal game via a penalty which put England 1-0 up against Iceland at Euro 2016. Iceland came back to win 2-1 and dump England out in one of the country's most humiliating defeats ever.
