A hostile reception welcomed Real Madrid to the Signal Iduna Park, a setting where the 'Blancos' were yet to emerge victorious. The noise inside the stadium was deafening as the ball got rolling, especially when the visitors tried to settle on the ball in the opening minutes.
The intensity of the fixture was made clear from the beginning, with both teams out for the win and holding a high line of pressure. The hosts looked strong and dangerous on the front foot, but the Germans' defence was not quite as organised as one would hope when facing the likes of Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo.
Right-back Dani Carvajal was the first to expose the lack of speed of Dortmund's backline by racing down the right channel. He eventually went for goal, swinging a left-footed strike at Burki which left Ronaldo and Bale bemused, expecting the ball to be fed into the middle where they awaited unmarked.
It began to look like it would be a long night for the home defenders when Ronaldo got in behind to square the ball for Bale. With the goal gaping for the Welshman, Pizczek raced back to make a last-ditch clearance.
Dortmund managed to shake off some of the pressure when Yarmolenko's cross was volleyed towards goal by Philipp, and Navas and Ramos both used their hands to clear off the line. The ball accidentally came of the Spaniard's arm and referee Bjorn Kuipers waved away protests.
Real took the precious lead after 18 minutes, when Carvajal crossed the ball for Bale to smash a first-time volley into the top corner. Zidane's team were looking good and eager to burst forward in search of a second, but Dortmund slowed things down to catch their breaths after a relentless start.
The home side came out to the second period with a plan, and they managed to smother Real with some good pressure. Varane made a crucial clearance to thwart Aubameyang inside the box, before the visitors found another opening.
Bale got away from the Dortmund defence down the left flank where he excels before calmly sending a cross along the ground for Ronaldo to fire past Burki.
It seemed Dortmund has mountains to climb, but their response was almost immediate. Aubameyang timed his run perfectly in between Varane and Ramos to poke in Castro's cross from close range.
The goal was followed by a surge forward from the hosts, further opening up the game. It was a make or break tactic from Dortmund, who risked everything going forward and, with barely ten minutes to go, saw Real put the game out of sight. Ronaldo was the man to blast the ball inside the near post from a tight angle to claim his personal double.
The difference could have been even greater as Dortmund never gave up on their search for a goal, but Burki denied a humiliating defeat for his side who left the pitch with their heads held high after a display Peter Bosz will pride himself upon.
