'It was nice to score at the Etihad with my history at Man Utd but to do it today was a sweet moment,' Rooney told Sky Sports, even though Sterling's late equaliser spoiled the party for the Toffees.
The former Manchester United striker said that the Red Devils would have celebrated his opener at the stadium of their arch-rivals. 'I'm sure the red half of Manchester would've enjoyed that as well', he said.
Scoring his second league goal of the season, Rooney worked hard when defending against Guardiola's team. 'It's not bad for someone who isn't fit anymore and can't get about the pitch... I've always put a shift in', he said about the 10.7km he ran at the Etihad. 'Tonight was tough performance and I was happy to help'.
Regarding his return to the England squad, he said: 'I'm focusing on Everton and I'm sure I'll speak to Gareth Southgate and see what happens'.
